Introduction

Sultanahmet Square is without a doubt one of the most important squares of Istanbul. In the Byzantine period, it was known as the “Hippodrome”. At the time of the Ottoman Empire, it started to be called Horse Square. During the Ottoman Empire forty days and forty nights of pride, circumcision weddings, feasts are held at Sultanahmet Square called “At Meydani”, janissary riots took place in this region. The first outstanding artifacts of the square are of course the sewn stones. During the Byzantine period, a three-story monument in the Hippodrome Square, where horse races were made, divided the Hippodrome into two. The racers competed on the racetrack seven times and won the first race to the starting point. In other words, there are racers turning around these three monuments. Obelisk, the most famous among these three storied monuments, was brought from Egypt in 390 and erected in its present place at full thirty-one days. The Snake Column, which adorns the square, was a talisman, which was brought from the Temple of Delphi in Apollon to protect the city from insect infestation and represented by three snakes (even though they were cut off today). The last monument on the square is the Thirty-two-meter-high Obelisk Obelisk, which looks extremely impressive and overlooks the hill.
